Learning made fun!

Happy Parent

My name is Kosoluchi and I am Igbo and a mom of a toddler. I have been raised in the Igbo culture in the diaspora and as I grew up I noticed that not a lot of Igbo parents are speaking Igbo to their young children.

I notice that even parents who are more fluent than I am are speaking English to their young children. I wondered- was it hard to teach children igbo? Is it hard for a baby to pick up Igbo? Why aren’t parents speaking Igbo to their children more, especially when the children are very young.

As my husband and I raise our daughter, I started to see that teaching her Igbo was easier than I thought. In fact, I saw that my daughter can pick up languages easier than I can.

It became so easy that I could not conform with the trend of other parents not speaking Igbo to their children. I had no excuse but to teach my child Igbo.I want to help keep the Igbo language from going extinct by teaching the next generation Igbo.

I also want to encourage parents who aren’t fluent that it’s okay. I am not an expert Igbo speaker, but I learned that that is not a prerequisite to teaching your child Igbo. All you need is the basics and to keep exposing them to the language. Their brains are sponges and they will soak it all up.

Let’s keep Igbo alive!
